Russian women secure jobs more quickly than men
On average, women take five months and three days to secure jobs—four days less than men—based on figures from Russia’s Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat). A similar pattern was observed during the 2020 pandemic when remote work and increased demand for healthcare professionals briefly narrowed gender differences in hiring.
“Women are quicker to compromise with employers,” explained Farida Mirzabalaeva, associate professor at the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics. She noted that companies, facing limited options to raise wages, are cutting staffing costs.
Experts say labor shortages are prompting recruiters to move away from traditional biases. Employers who previously hesitated to hire women due to concerns over maternity leave now find fewer alternatives.
Women are also perceived as more willing to accept lower salaries in exchange for flexible schedules and a better work-life balance. They are concentrated in industries with high turnover and staff shortages, including education, healthcare, hospitality, and retail.
Sectors traditionally dominated by women, such as light manufacturing and tourism, are reportedly growing. Demand is also increasing this year in fields like marketing, cosmetology, design, culture, and the arts. The IT sector is becoming more accessible as workforce needs override gender biases.
Despite these shifts, a significant gender pay gap remains. In 2023, men earned on average 27% more than women, and this disparity may be increasing as male-dominated fields like defense face mounting labor shortages.
