Russian females get jobs quicker than males
Farida Mirzabalaeva, associate professor at the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, explained that women tend to be more flexible in negotiations with employers, especially as companies face limited salary growth options and aim to reduce staffing costs.
Labor shortages have prompted recruiters to move past old stereotypes, with many employers now hiring women despite previous concerns about maternity leave. Women are often willing to accept lower pay in exchange for flexible schedules and better work-life balance. They commonly work in sectors with high turnover and staff shortages, such as education, healthcare, hospitality, and retail.
Fields traditionally dominated by women, including light manufacturing and tourism, are expanding. This year, there is increased demand in marketing, cosmetology, design, culture, and the arts. Even IT sectors are opening up as the need for workers outweighs gender biases.
Despite these changes, the gender pay gap remains significant, with men earning an average of 27% more in 2023. This disparity may widen as male-dominated industries like defense face growing labor shortages.
Rosstat also reports that the average job search duration in Russia is now just over five months—nearly two months shorter than ten years ago—and the national unemployment rate hit a historic low of 2.2% in May.
Globally, female labor participation remains lower than men’s, with rates of 48.7% compared to 73.0% in 2023, according to the International Labour Organization, though the gap varies by region.
