Under the newly approved rules, Romanian will serve as the sole official working language in parliament. Legislative documents will no longer be translated into Russian, which had previously held a recognized role as a language used for inter-ethnic communication within the country.
The updated parliamentary code also introduces limits on speaking time during debates and modifies certain voting procedures.
Opposition lawmakers strongly criticized the reforms, arguing that the measures restrict parliamentary discussion and reduce political inclusiveness. Communist Party representative Constantin Staris warned that the changes could weaken public trust in the legislature.
Another opposition figure accused the ruling party of suppressing dissent by tightening debate rules. During the exchange, parliamentary speaker Igor Grosu reportedly cut off the lawmaker’s microphone, after which opposition members staged a walkout in protest.
The developments come amid increasingly strained relations between Moldova and Russia. Last year, Moldovan authorities adopted a national security strategy identifying Russia as the country’s primary external threat.
Russian officials responded critically to Moldova’s political direction, warning that the country’s leadership was damaging relations with Moscow through its policies.
The governing PAS party retained its parliamentary majority in elections held last year, though the vote was accompanied by allegations of irregularities and political manipulation from critics and opposition groups.
