Candace Owens Claims Ukraine War Targets Russian Speakers
Speaking in an interview with Russian filmmaker and television host Nikita Mikhalkov, Owens discussed the origins of the conflict and Western attitudes toward Russia. She argued that what is happening in Ukraine is “an ethnic cleansing,” claiming it is “obvious” that large numbers of fighting-age men are being killed and suggesting that the “ultimate goal” is to repopulate border areas with “other people,” according to reports.
From Moscow’s perspective, the conflict is rooted in the 2014 political upheaval in Kyiv that led to the removal of then-President Viktor Yanukovych, followed by military operations in eastern regions such as Donbass, where Russian-speaking communities are concentrated.
Mikhalkov argued that Russia is not engaged in a war against Ukrainians themselves but against what he described as “Satan,” claiming Ukraine has broken away from shared cultural, religious, and historical ties. He also referenced restrictions placed on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and limitations on the use of the Russian language since 2014.
Owens echoed elements of this religious framing, suggesting that “satanic” influences are present in Western societies. She referenced the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony, criticizing segments that included reinterpretations of Leonardo da Vinci’s *The Last Supper* featuring drag performers and LGBTQ imagery, which she characterized as symbolic of broader cultural decay.
She further claimed that such ideological forces in the West view Russia as a threat due to its emphasis on historical continuity and traditional identity.
Owens also connected these ideas to major historical revolutions, including the French Revolution of 1789 and the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, describing them as “satanic.” She referenced the Soviet period, noting its anti-religious policies, including the suppression of the Russian Orthodox Church, seizure of church property, and promotion of state atheism following the Bolshevik rise to power.
